PAGE 96 Panel 1: Wide panel. We look over King's shoulder as Vanita and the Demon King sit in the blanket fort. Vanita holds a hand to her chin in thought. She says, "Yep. In the CLOSED stacks. Not for general circulation. And only university students can read it." King asks, "Well...Do you know any students?" Panel 2: Wide panel. Vanita squeezes her eyes shut in thought as around her are blank bubbles of thought. Panel 3: tall panel. Close up on Vanita's hands texting on her smart phone. On the back is a picture of a cat barbarian. Vanita says, "I know someone who might." She types away with a TAPPITY TAPPITY TAP. Panel 4: Cut to Charlie and Clow in Charlie's apartment. They are both startled when Charlie's phone vibrates in her hand.

Panel 2: Wide panel, close up on King. "If I may guess," they say, "...all of his books are burned, aren't they?" Panel 3: Wide panel, close up on Vanita. She pokes two fingers together, looking away while saying, "Not all of them! Just most of them. But the ones that survived are uh..." Panel 4: Wide panel. We see a wide establishing shot of the exterior of a library, with three stories of height and sparsely decorated with trees on the surrounding lawns. Vanita, off-panel, says, "...Rare. So rare that bookstores don't sell reprints."

  • PAGE 93 Panel 1: Wide panel. Under the blanket fort shadow, sitting on the floor in front of the green couch, Vanita and King sit side-by-side. Their dinner plates sit on the couch cushion by their heads, with leftover chicken bones and forks. King, looking thoughtful, recollects as they say, "I recall a drawing on the floor. A seven-pointed star...and seven black candles. One at each point of the star." Panel 2: Wide panel, close up on King looking puzzled. "I don't recall the exact incantation," they say. "...But I remember it had been copied from another book..." Panel 3: Vanita asks, "Do you remember the book?" King raises a finger, face lighting up with recognition. "Not exactly," they say. "I think it was something-or other Incantorum. But I remember the author!"

We hear from inside the apartment, "You mentioned a spell before dinner. One that can send people to the Pit... Panel 3: Wide panel. Closer in on the sliding glass door opening into Vanita's apartment. There's enough of a crack in the curtain for the speech bubble to come through. Vanita asks, "...Do you remember any of it?" Panel 4: Inside the apartment. We see the blanket fort. Under the covering, King says, "Hmm..."

You too. Be safe." Panel 2: Close up on Charlie's hand holding the phone. Charlie says, "'k. Night!" Claudia from the phone says, "Night." And Charlie hangs up. Panel 3: Medium shot of Clow, Charlie, and Jared. Jared says, "You two ever consider operating a detective agency?" Panel 4: Charlie and Clow smirk. Charlie says, "Dude. Don holds one hand on Claudia's as she holds the phone. Don says, "If I knew for certain, we wouldn't have called." Panel 3: Closer in on Claudia. She says, "Think you could investigate this for us, please?" Panel 4: We look over Charlie's shoulder and down to her phone. She says, "I've got her number. We'll see what we can do." Claudia (on the phone) says, "Thank you! Let's just hope it's not another Halloween incident." Panel 5: At this angle, we see a medium close-up on Charlie and her brother Jared. What Charlie says startles Jared. Charlie says, "Let's hope not. Got anything else that could help us?" Panel 6: Close up on Charlie's phone. Claudia (on the phone) says, "If we think of anything, we'll text you." Charlie (off-panel) says, "Sounds good. I'll keep you posted as we find out more."

Charlie, holding her phone, leans in towards Clow. Clow says, "We're listening." Claudia (from the phone) says, "Alright." Panel 2: Medium close-up on Charlie and Clow. Claudia (on the phone) says, "A young lady came into my shop today to sell tea on consignment. Her name's Vanita - " Charlie's face lights up in recognition and she says, "Wait..." Panel 3: Wide panel. Charlie sits on the right of the panel. Her speech balloons frame an illustration of Vanita on the left. Clow, sitting close to Charlie, listens intently. Charlie asks, "Does she have black hair? Pale skin? With her hair real tight into a poof in the back?" Panel 4: Claudia sits on the stool. Don, standing by her, looks startled. Claudia says, "Y-yes! How do you - " Charlie (on the phone) says, "I met her at the grocery store today!" Panel 5: Back to medium close-up on Charlie and Clow. Charlie is startled, and Clow looks serious. Claudia (on the phone) says, "Well, Don could smell hellfire on her jars. We think something from the pit lives in her house."

As tends to be the case with the best paranormal comics of this type, the main draw is that it's all about the relationships-- relationships that aren't exactly steamy, they're more caring...."
